Departure from the hotel heading southeast passing through the valleys of Cumbayá, Tumbaco to start climbing the road to the highlands of the Andes in this place we will observe the ecosystem of the “paramo” trees such as Polylepis, Romerillo, Almohadillas and the streams that originate in the glaciers of the Cayambe and Antisana Volcano and run hundreds of kilometers to form streams, rivers and lagoons. After a one-hour drive, we will stop at the highest point of the road in the sector of “La Virgen” which is at 4000 m / 12,500 ft. This is the highest point on the Ecuadorian roads and the border with the Amazonian province of Napo, where we will have time to take pictures as it is a natural viewpoint in the Andes. Then we will descend to pass by the large lagoon of Papallacta and in 10 minutes we will pass through the town of the same name to go to the complex and resort of hot springs of “Papallacta”.
Inside the complex we can first do an easy level hike of about an hour inside the Polylepis Forest of one hour observing plants typical of the Andes such as: Romerillos, Polylepis, Huaycundos, Lupinus, mosses etc. In this tour we will see the formation of the streams that come down from the glaciers of the Cayambe Volcano and form the Papallacta River that later will be a tributary of the rivers that go to the Amazon. After our walk we go to the exclusive area of the spa where we will register and open an account. We have the option to schedule a massage or a facial treatment or just enjoy the healthy thermal pools which have different temperatures and a healing, energetic and spiritual power.
If you wish to have something to eat or drink, there is a good restaurant, or the guide will recommend local restaurants at the entrance of the complex.
